Do you have style goals?
No? You should! And here’s why!
Each December, you likely set goals for the new year, correct? Are they always the same resolutions from year to year? Of course not. As time passes, we change as people. The same thing goes for your personal style–it’s not stagnant.
Style goals help you focus and elevate your style. They:
Help you to build a wardrobe that aligns with your lifestyle.
Aid you in creating outfits that reflect your personal sense of style.
Save you money because you can be more intentional with your shopping.
For example, here are my style goals for this year:
ENSURE MY WARDROBE ONLY HAS PIECES THAT REFLECT MY PERSONAL STYLE RIGHT NOW
Over the past year, I increasingly pulled out pieces in my wardrobe and said to myself, “That’s just not me anymore.” I feel my personal style shifting, so I’m getting rid of things that don’t align anymore, and creating a plan for what I should add.
WEAR MORE OF WHAT’S ALREADY IN MY CLOSET
Just like many of you, I tend to wear many of my favorite pieces over and over. (We wear 20% of our closet 80% of the time.) This year, I’m determined to shop my closet more. One way I accomplish this is by looking for inspiration and saving pictures of looks I could create with things I already have in my closet.
INVEST IN QUALITY ITEMS AND AVOID FAST FASHION
We all like deals, but I’m focusing on quality over quantity this year. I just got rid of three HUGE garbage bags of clothes, most of which were not high-quality items…so they got donated. When I was a single mom, I would buy clothes regularly at Target, Old Navy, H&M, Zara and other factory outlet stores. It was the right choice for that stage of my life. However, as we age, I encourage women to buy the best quality they can afford (especially on foundational items) so I’m following my own advice!
ADD MORE COCKTAIL AND FORMAL ATTIRE TO MY WARDROBE
At this point of my life, I find myself going to more and more galas, particularly fundraisers for worthy causes. I just attended one that came up last minute, and I found myself scrambling to find the right outfit for the dress code of this particular event. It’s the right time for me to invest in these kinds of items.
Ready to set your own goals?
Start by looking at your personal and professional goals. Are there any style goals that could support them?
For instance, if a professional goal is to find a new director-level job, does your wardrobe communicate that you are a leader? Do you need to invest in some new professional clothing?
Or, perhaps you are well on your way to losing 25 pounds. Could invest in some new pieces when you reach a milestone?
To get your process started, here are just a few of potential style goals:
Get dressed faster in the morning.
Wear what I already have more often.
Take a shopping break.
Declutter my wardrobe.
Start an outfit diary.
Invest in a certain category that you’re lacking (i.e. blazers, summer dresses, etc.)
Ensure I have all the basics in my closet.
Take a break from fast fashion.
Shop local and second hand more often.
Take more risks and have more fun with my outfits.
Stop impulse purchases!
Wear more color and patterns.
Make my closet look more aesthetically pleasing.
With love and style,
