Looks I’m Loving: The Statement Wrist

I latched onto this style immediately when we started seeing it in the stores. Stacking bracelets to make a statement wrist has a way of looking effortless. But, while it’s not complicated, there is a method for making the look work. Here’s how to do it.

When putting together your stack of bracelets, mix...

…different colors together. Don’t go matchy-matchy. Making a statement means you want to draw attention to your wrist. All one color scheme makes the bracelets meld together for a much subtler look.

…your watch into the stack. Apple watches are especially fun to work with because there are so many fashion options for changeable bands. It’s generally best to put bracelets on both sides of the watch.

…different sizes, weights and widths. Consistency is NOT the name of the game when it comes to this look. But do stay away from really large bangles when mixing numerous other bracelets and a watch. Or your stack might be up to your elbow!

…silver, gold and rose gold together. This was so freeing for me--in fashion and in home decor as well. Mixing metals takes the complexity out of building your stack.

…textures like beads, leather, spikes, rope, snakeskin, stones. Variety is key with this look!

…dressy bracelets with casual bracelets. Again, the contrast is what makes this look interesting so don’t shy away from grabbing that blingy cubic zirconia bracelet and wearing it with some mala beads or a rope bracelet.

…an odd number of bracelets. This is a general rule of thumb when decorating anything, including your body. But use your best judgement about what looks good based on your outfit and the bracelets you are stacking.

…the statement wrist with more simple jewelry. Bring the focal point to your wrist and don’t pile on multiple necklaces or rings or you could assault the senses.

Considerations for the office

  • Don’t go too wild. Keep it more subtle...up to 3 or 4 depending on the size of the bracelets and whether or not you’re including your watch. Throw on a few more when you leave the office for happy hour!

  • Consider the noise. Bangles especially can clank around and annoy your co-workers as well as be distracting in meetings.

  • Think about your comfort. If you work at a desk, I’ve found that too many bracelets can often be uncomfortable when typing. Again, bangles are the worst offenders here.

  • Reserve the novelty ones for nights and weekends. While mixing juvenile-looking bracelets with more sophisticated ones can be fun for a night out or weekend baseball game, they may not be the best choice for the office.
