Ever since my early 20s, I have LOVED hats of all types. There’s just something about a hat that adds a bit of pizazz and a finishing touch to an outfit. How you wear them is largely up to preference so just play around and see what feels good.
But for a little inspo, here are some styling tips for 7 different styles of hats and which ones look best on different face shapes.
POPULAR TYPES OF HATS
These hats give off a cool British vibe. I love wearing one with skinny jeans, a graphic tee, and a moto jacket. Or throw one on with a chunky sweater and neck scarf.
These hats have been around for decades but they are particularly on-trend this season. Wearing one gives an outfit a bit of a retro feel. You’ll find them in all colors, patterns and fabrics right now.
Fedoras tend to be felt or wool, so wearing them in the spring and fall are especially good times. But nothing is keeping you from throwing on a white one with a summer evening outfit like this! Wearing a fedora gives an outfit an easy, breezy, slightly boho twist.
Often made of sturdy straw, sun hats have various sizes of brims. I’m sensitive to the sun, so for me, the wider the better! Pair it with any summer outfit--a swimsuit and cover-up, maxi dress or shorts and a tee.
Use a panama hat much like a sun hat, but wear it with slightly dressier outfits. A classic one is a light color with a black band. I love one with a summer jumpsuit or to throw on before heading out to Sunday brunch.
Wear this hat to give an outfit a timeless elegance. The world is your oyster with a cloche hat. There are so many different materials, embellishments and colors, allowing them to be worn with a wide variety of outfits.
You’ve likely been wearing caps for many years, but try wearing them in new ways, especially to dress down an outfit. Some fun approaches: Try one that allows you to wear your ponytail high on your head. Or wear it with your hair loose like the Eurpoean ladies do.
