You (Yes, You!) Can Wear a Jumpsuit

Many people who know me know that I love jumpsuits. Like REALLY love jumpsuits. I count 21 beauties in my closet!

I’ve styled many, many women who say they can’t wear jumpsuits because of their body type. It’s just not true. When it comes to jumpsuits, finding the right one is no different than finding jeans that fit you properly. There are styles and cuts that are good for different body types.

For instance, I have an hourglass figure and have trouble getting straight-leg bottoms over my hips, so I need to look for fabrics with stretch.

Here are jumpsuit recommendations for various body types.

HEIGHT

PETITE

Opt for a cropped style, as it elongates your legs. V-necks are also elongating. Go for tailored and fitted jumpsuits. Avoid billowy and oversized styles that will overwhelm your frame.

TALL

You’re made for full-length, wide-leg jumpsuits. Avoid v-necks as they will elongate you even more.

PROPORTION

SHORT-WAISTED

Avoid belts or high-waited styles. Rather, look for a flowy jumpsuit without a defined waist or a drop waist. Keep to a solid color or pattern head to toe.

LONG-WAISTED

Wear a jumpsuit with an empire waist to de-emphasize your torso. Avoid vertical stripes on the top. A solid color or pattern head to toe is best.

SHAPE

BIGGER IN THE MIDDLE

Look for a blouson top or empire waist. Vertical stripes are flattering. Make sure the jumpsuit skims the middle of your body and doesn’t constrict.

RECTANGLE BODY SHAPE

Wear a belted jumpsuit to create a waist. A belt that isn’t the same color as the jumpsuit is ideal, preferably in a dark color like brown or black. Added bonus: a style with wide legs and volume at the shoulder to create even more of an illusion of an hourglass shape.

PEAR BODY SHAPE

Look for volume in the top of the jumpsuit, preferable at the shoulders. Avoid wide leg styles. These strategies will balance out your body.

INVERTED TRIANGLE BODY SHAPE

Opt for volume on the bottom with wider legs. Avoid volume on the top to balance out your body.

If you are more than one of these body types, combine the strategies. For instance:

  • If you are PETITE and SHORT-WAISTED, look for a v-neck jumpsuit with wide legs but no defined waist.

  • If you are PEAR SHAPE and LONG-WAISTED, look for a jumpsuit with puff shoulders and an empire waist.
